1913 saw the formation of Aldi’s by the Albrechts, Karl, and Theo. With a background in mining and baker’s assistant, they started this small store in Essen that would grow throughout the following century to become an international multi-billion dollar affair. The Albrecht family continued to open stores throughout the world, with 13 being open in the Ruhr Valley alone by 1950. Their business canny was an essential part of how Aldi’s grew, with them reducing prices by as much as was legally allowed and removing products from their shelves that didn’t appeal to the communities their stores were located in.
In 1960 the company split into Aldi Nord, and Aldi Sud due to a dispute over whether or not Aldi should sell cigarettes, and has been separate financially ever since, though both companies products often appear on shelves in both stores. Today Aldi’s has over 10,366 stores, including their Trader Joe’s interests, in countries all over the world, including China and Slovenia.
