About DFAS
Things in the years before 1990 were a bit of a mess in the accounting sphere. All three major branches of the military were responsible for handling all of their financial systems, including payroll, budgeting, and accounting. While this was convenient for the individual branches, it was something of an accounting nightmare when their independent systems tried to speak to each other. In 1991 a solution was proposed that would streamline this entire system, saving untold thousands or millions of dollars in operation costs and working hours by consolidating all of that work into a single agency. That agency was the Defense Finance and Accounting Service.
