About Epson
Epson is a Japanese electronics company that designs, manufactures, develops, and sells personal printers and related products, such as scanners, desktop computers and laptops, home theatre projectors and televisions, and cash registers. The company got its start making watches in 1942, doing business as Daiwa Kogyo Ltd., which later became Seiko Epson Corporation.
In 1964, the Seiko Group was selected as the official timekeeper for the Tokyo Olympic games and built a printing timer. The company launched the first miniprinter in 1968, which was the basis for their line of Epson printers that officially began in 1975. The name “Epson” means Son of EP (Electronic Printer).
In 1982, Epson created the world’s first hand-held computer and the world’s smallest television. Their first commercial inkjet printer was released in 1984. In 2002, the company received the Corporate Innovation Recognition Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc.
The company states: “Our long tradition of introducing efficient, precise products will continue into the future – with the continued development of some of the most advanced micromechantronics capabilities for ultra-fine, high-precision processing.”
