GNC began in 1935 at a little store in Pittsburgh. The store sold health food including yogurt and healthy sandwiches. The first day at the store brought in $35, but the owner was able to open a second location later that year. Unfortunately, floods destroyed both stores in 1936, but he rebuilt and reopened both locations and six other stores within the next five years.
During the 60s, the health food craze helped grow the business. The owner opened stores outside of Pennsylvania and changed the name to General Nutrition Centers.
In the 1980s, there were over 1,000 stores across the country. They added vitamins, supplements, beverages, and cosmetics to their stock.
Currently, there are more than 4,800 locations and franchises in 46 markets outside the U.S.
