Lenovo is a Chinese company that designs, manufactures, develops, and sells personal computers and related products, as well as smart televisions. The company is the largest personal computer vendor, with operations in more than 60 countries. Lenovo was founded in Beijing in November 1984 by Liu Chuanzhi and a group of ten engineers. At the time, it was given the name Legend. The company’s current name is derived from the “Le” in Legend and the Latin “novo,” which means “new.”
The company acquired IBM’s computer business in 2005, acquiring its ThinkPad and ThinkCentre lines. It has since made numerous other ventures with technology companies. Lenovo has headquarters in Beijing, North Carolina, and Singapore. In 2001, Yang Yuanqing, Lenovo’s CEO and chairman, was named one of Asia’s rising stars in business by Business Week. In October 2013, Lenovo hired Ashton Kutcher as a spokesman and product engineer. Kutcher studied biochemical engineering at the University of Iowa and contributed his expertise to Lenovo’s Yoga Tablet.
