About Microsoft Windows
1981 saw the beginnings of an institution in operating systems, though at the time it was known as an “Interface Manager.” 2 years later the world saw the first glimmer of the Windows platform in Windows 1.0. Modern users would barely recognize this platform when compared to the masterwork that is Windows today, but it was just the beginning of the road. Four years later Windows 2.0 was released with significant updates, including memory management and an improved user interface.
Windows 3.0 was released in 1990 and is the version that launched it into the exploding world of computing of its time. For many Windows 3.0 represented the first GUI, or graphical user interface, that they’d seen outside of a program loaded from DOS. This platform would remain the standard for computer platforms until 1995 when Windows 95 hit the scene, a version that would explode across the world and become the standard for all systems running Windows. There are still active computers running Windows 95 today, over 20 years later. Windows remains the preeminent standard for all computing platforms, and its influence is felt in every other Operating System that enters the market.
