About SNAP
SNAP stands for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program and is a federal assistance program administered by the United States Department of Agriculture under the Food and Nutrition program. The program was formerly known as the Food Stamp program and assists millions of individuals and families with low or no income in the United States. SNAP benefits are distributed by each state’s Division of Social Services or Children and Family Services. SNAP is the largest program in the domestic hunger safety net, and the program helps those who need it make informed decisions about applying for the program and its benefits.
SNAP benefits that are received by an individual or household is dependent on income, expenses, and size of the household. Each month, SNAP food stamp benefits are directly deposited into an Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) card account. EBT cards pay for food at supermarkets, convenience stores, other food retailers, and even some farmer’s markets. There are limitations to the products that can be purchased such as prepared food, alcohol, and some other food items. SNAP encourages people to learn more about food and nutrition while using the program to choose healthy food choices if available.
