Warner Bros. Discovery established TLC in 1980 under the name “The Learning Channel,” abbreviated to TLC. The Discovery Channel would come to own it in the 1990s. At this time, TLC began gravitating towards providing reality television programming, especially those regarding personal stories and lifestyles. This focus became prominent, initializing it to TLC and the “The Learning Channel” title being removed. Ninety-five million households enjoyed the programming on this channel as of 2015. This accounts for nearly 82% of all households with cable TV in the US.

About TLC
The earliest days of The Learning Channel started in 1972 when the Appalachian Educational Satellite Project, or AESP, was formed. The Appalachian Regional Commission established AESP to deliver remote educational opportunities. It was also established to ensure that various institutes of education throughout the Appalachian area had access to health, career, and instructional-oriented programming. 1980 the channel changed its name to “The Learning Channel,” with the tagline “A place for learning minds.”
In 1991 it would be absorbed by The Discovery Channel, Inc. During this time, it continued to provide educational and instructional programming. This would change when the channel began to see a drop in ratings resulting from its narrow target audience. The 1990s would see it pursuing different forms of programming, shifting quickly to entertainment. This period would see the degradation and ultimate elimination of “Ready Set Learn,” the channels children’s block. This pretense of being an educational channel would disappear entirely by 2006.
