About Napster
Napster is an online music streaming service that was previously known as Rhapsody. The subscription service is headquartered in Seattle, Washington.
At first, Rhapsody only streamed content from Naxos Records and other independent labels. Over 2002, they added EMI, BMG, Warner Brothers, Records, and Sony to their list of offerings. They added Universal Records to their catalog in July 2002.
Rhapsody acquired Napster in October 2011. They phased out the name and began using Napster full time in July 2016.
Rhapsody deployed a mobile app for Apple and Android users in 2011. This app, called The Rhapsody Music Software helps organize music collections and competes with Apple’s iTunes.
Before being purchased by Rhapsody, Napster was a peer-to-peer file sharing service that happened to focus on music. At its peak between 1999 and 2001, the company had 80 million subscribers. Peer to peer sharing was available before Napster, but their interface made it more accessible.
This illegal sharing, of course, brought legal issues to the company. Napster was unable to comply with the court’s rulings in 2001 and shut down the website. The bankrupt business regained control of the name.
