About PGW
PGW found its start in 1836 with a meager forty-six gaslights set up to light Second Street in Philadelphia, the same year that this city became recognized as a center of finance and industry in the United States. In 1856 a new holder for natural gas was built at the Point Breeze Plaza, at the time the largest holding tank in the nation containing 1.8 million cubic feet. In 1877 the gas they provided was showcased as a novelty of the modern age, not realizing that it was soon to mark the future of the world and become recognized as one of the best ways to prepare food.
1902 saw that turnaround, the gas industry exploded as hundreds of gas ranges began being sold to homes and businesses, taking its place as the nation’s favorite way to prepare food. In the years since natural gas has retained that position, and has become one of the best and most ecologically sound ways to warm homes, heat fuels, and change lives.
