About SRP
When people were first settling in the Phoenix area, their primary source of water was the Salt River. Essential to their agricultural activities while simultaneously being prone to flooding and droughts, some form of management was necessary to allow the area not just to be habitable, but to thrive. Multiple attempts in this direction were made, but it wasn’t until the early 1900’s that the project finally took hold.
Originally built as a masonry dam, the dam was later encased with concrete to help update it to modern safety standards. The dam began being used for the generation of power even before it was complete, and has continued to be a significant source of electricity in the state. The Salt River Project Agricultural Improvement and Power District weren’t created until 1936, but quickly became part of this interest. Today eleven power generation stations are owned by this organization and provide power to the people of Phoenix, as well as helping to manage the water concerns for residential and agricultural pursuits alike.
