Angie’s List was founded in 1995 by William S. Oesterie and Angie Hicks. Hicks worked for Oesterie and struggled to find reliable construction contractors for his renovations. Hicks started a call-in service and publication called Columbus Neighbors. This allowed homeowners to share their experiences of working with local businesses.

The idea grew and moved to the internet. At first, the service was only available to paid subscribers. In 2016, Angie’s List offered freemium service.

Customers grade companies using a rating scale similar to a report card. They rate companies on their price, quality, responsiveness, punctuality, and professionalism from A to F. The “grades” are averaged, and a score is given to each company.

Angie’s List is headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana and is traded on the NASDAQ exchange.
