About APS
In 1886, Phoenix Illuminating Gas and Electric Company was formed by Japanese immigrant Hutchlon Ohnick to service the people of Phoenix, which was then only three years old. After several name changes and mergings, the company finally changed its name to Arizona Public Service. APS services downtown and northern Phoenix as well as a large portion to the north and east. In addition, it serves Douglas, Flagstaff, Yuma, and Prescott.
APS is the largest electric utility in Arizona. They have been in business for more than 130 years and currently have 6,400 employees. They service 2.7 million people.
The company states: “Our story is Arizona’s story. We power our state’s growth by supporting 39,200 jobs and paying more than $500 million in state and local taxes. We promote growth and opportunity by spending $300 million every year with diverse businesses. It all adds up to $3.4 billion in annual economic impact in Arizona. We are a driving force of our state’s economy and a vital member of the communities we serve.”
