Three individuals, Jessica Scorpio, Sam Zaid, and Elliot Kroo, got together and created Getaround in 2009. It started by providing services in Portland, OR. Its formation and operations were originally funded by a $1.725 million grant provided by the Federal Highway Administration. The company performed well enough that it would acquire City Carshare in 2016, acquiring its member base, fleet, and parking spaces. They would get another $300 million in funding from Softbank. This funding was used to acquire the Drivy carshare platform, substantially increasing their coverage area yet again.
