About the Montgomery Advertiser
The Montgomery paper began publication in 1829 as The Planter’s Gazette. It became the Montgomery Advertiser in 1833. R.F. Hudson worked for the paper and eventually purchased all the newspaper’s stock. He then bought their competition, The Alabama Journal. Carmage Walls purchased the paper in 1963. Multimedia Corp owned if from 1968 to 1995. In 1995 the Gannett Company acquired the paper.
The Advertiser is the largest daily newspaper published in Alabama. Even though the paper was awarded three Pulitzer Prizes throughout its history, the paper does have a regrettable past. The paper supported white supremacy and wrote how lynchings were necessary. The newspaper has since apologized for spreading hate.
The Montgomery Advertiser is affiliated with USA Today.
