About MPSC
The Michigan Public Service Commission is designed to protect the public by ensuring safe, reliable and accessible energy at reasonable rates. This commission is for all of Michigan’s residents. It also includes the telecommunication industry.
There are three members of this commission appointed by the governor of Michigan. Commissioners serve six-year terms.
The MPSC began in 1873 and worked to regulate railroad rates and conditions of service. The commission expanded its power to include electric rates and then telephone service with the last being added in 1911.
