About Pepco
The Washington Traction and Electric Company were established in the 19th century to manage Washington streetcar companies. Additional power pumped into the system was sold to other streetcar and cable-car interests to convert into electricity. Later these minor ventures would expand to providing electricity for residential and business pursuits. As they grew into this market industry controls would require them to pick between streetcars and power generation, and income alone made it clear the right choice was the latter. In 2001, after over a century of operation, the company changed its name to the Potomac Electric Power Company or Pepco.
