About PPL
In 1912 a company was organized in Utah under the name Utah Power & Light. While it served the Utah area, it was owned by a larger holding company known as EBASCO stationed in New York. UP&L expanded rapidly to encompass seven other companies in the same industry, but it didn’t stop there. Before it was done this company would dominate the industry in its area, absorbing a total of 130 companies under its umbrella. As part of these acquisitions, Pacific Power and Light came into existence from some companies that were failing in Washington and Oregon and eventually would go on to absorb Mountain States Power Company, doubling its size and coverage area. 31% of PacifiCorp’s 136,000-mile service area is in Oregon, and an addition 7% is in Washington, the area serviced by PPL.
