About Sports Illustrated
This magazine was established by Stuart Scheftel in 1936, but back then it was a very different sort of magazine. While it was aimed at the sportsman, its target audiences were those that participated In skiing, tennis, and golf. That magazine was then sold to another company that held it for all of 6 issues before the company closed, but it represented significant changes in the magazine as it turned its focus to boxing, basketball, and baseball and put it into competition with other magazines of its kind at the time. One of the challenges faced by the magazine at the time was its inability to cover current events due to the time it took for it to be produced. Ironically it would be someone who had no love of sports that launched it to greatness, Time lead Henry Luce.
Ironically Sports Illustrated would not be accessible nor profitable for many years after its initial release, but it was gaining traction as the populace of the United States was starting to take hold of a fascination with sports like never seen before. With a little bit of lucky timing, an iconic swimsuit issue, and the introduction of the extended “bonus piece” at the end of every episode, the magazine went from a curiosity to an icon of sports news.
