Telcel is a wireless communications company owned by America Movil. It provides phone, date, and texting to citizens of Mexico. As of 2006, 90% of the Mexican population could receive coverage from Telcel’s services. As of 2011, Telcel reported that it had 66.9 million subscribers. This makes up 80% of cellular service customers.
Telcel has prepaid and postpaid services. Prepaid customers purchase a card for a certain amount of talk time. New customers are given an Amigo Kit, which includes the handset, charger, and airtime.
Telcel is working to expand their technology to all areas of Mexico. Currently, they provide 4G services in nine Mexican cities. As you read this, that number has probably increased to 26 Mexican cities.
