The company was first founded in 1975 by the Lawrence brothers, who all worked together in the family clothing business. The first Charlotte Russe storefront was established in San Diego, California. From there the company experienced rapid expansions with dozens more stores opening within the preceding years.

It was in 1991 that the company first hit a revenue of $50 Million. The company was purchased in 1996 by the Saunders Karp & Megrue investment firm. These new owners drove the company through rapid expansion: developing it into a chain of shopping mall stores.
