Deseret First Credit Union, initially founded as the LDS Church Office Credit Union on August 4, 1955, was created to provide banking services to Church employees. The first board members were Henry Tempest, Fern Dunn, Keith Carroll, LaRue Sneff, and Gordon B. Hinckley. DFCU was established to support members of the Church of Latter-Day Saints involved in missionary work and dedicated to encouraging a life of Provident Living.
The credit union’s growth led to the expansion of its membership to include any employee of The Church and, later, all members and family members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. In the 1980s, the official name was changed to Deseret First Credit Union. It is a not-for-profit cooperative company owned by its members and operates with a democratically elected volunteer Board of Directors.
