About MBTA
The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority was established over two centuries ago during the golden age of rail. One of the nation’s oldest railroads started as a stagecoach in 1793, and eventually evolved into a horse-drawn rail line in 1856. In short order, 20 more lines were created in and around the Boston area. Finally, these lines were consolidated to help regulate fares and reduce the amount of competition that was occurring at the time. Throughout its history it would evolve to include streetcars and buses, increasing and continuing to serve Massachusetts transportation needs. Today the organization operates 1,193 miles of tracks and rail, as well as bus routes.
