About Nasty Gal
Nasty Gal was started by Sophia Amoruso when she sold vintage clothing from her San Francisco apartment. Currently, they sell new clothes, shoes, and accessories.
INC Magazine named the company “Fastest Growing Retailer” in 2012. Amoruso claims that social media was influential in the growth of her company.
Betty Davis, who Amoruso said is the “original Nasty Gal,” inspired the company name.
Nasty Gal filed for bankruptcy in 2016. A British company purchased the company and continues to operate it. Even though there does not seem to be any mention of this on their website, there are several brick and mortar locations for the store. The stores are located in Los Angeles, Santa Monica, and London.
Nasty Gal collections include Shoe Cult, Nasty Gal Denim Collection, Nasty Gal Swimwear, and Nasty Gal Lingerie. They also collaborated with M.A.C. to sell a collections of lipsticks and nail polish.
Amoruso wrote a book about her experience starting a company. The book, #GIRLBOSS, was also made into a Netflix original show. The series did not last long though. She also edited a magazine titled Super Nasty, which featured articles on fashion, music, and culture.
