The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation was formed in 1970 to help maintain the quality of roads and transportation throughout the state of Pennsylvania. Prior to this, there had been multiple organizations responsible for handling the diverse elements of transportation in Pennsylvania, including the Department of Revenue, the Department of Community Affairs, the Department of Commerce, and other departments including Military Affairs and Forest and Waters. With so many hands in the pot it was difficult to create coordinated efforts to keep transportation venues in working orders, and so PennDOT was formed.
