About Post Office
The United States Postal Service is older than the United States themselves, finding its roots in the failed mail system experiments of the North American Colonies. In those early days, the focus was on getting mail out to the coast and across the sea back to families in England. In 1691 the North American Postal Service was established by Thomas Neale, authorized by the British crown. The grant empowered Neale to “establish within the chief parts of their majesties colonies… an office for receiving and dispatching letters and pacquets”.
One of the most influential parts of this grant was the ability granted to Neale to collect a postal tax, essentially a ‘stamp price’ for shipping and receiving post. Slowly throughout the developmental years of the colonies, the postal service developed, but it didn’t become officially established until 1792. In those days it was known as the United States Post Office Department. Since then it has become as important a part of the United States national identity as the Bald Eagle.
