About New York Life Insurance
First opened in 1845, Nautilus Mutual Life sold fire and marine insurance. They changed their name to the current one in 1849. New York Life Insurance has altered as history changed. Early in the company’s history, they insured the lives of slaves for their owner. They also sold policies to soldiers fighting in the Civil War.
The company continued to grow throughout the decades. In 1892, the president of the company introduced the idea of branch locations, which enabled agents to work for the company across the country and add to the list of insured.
Currently, there are 11,320 employees and 12,000 agents of NYLI.
