About SSI
The concept of social security funded by the government was first put forward in 1933 by one Francis Townsend. In 1950 a movement would begin debating the necessity and benefit of having a form of ‘social insurance’ in place, and more importantly how a plan like this would be funded. There was an initial concern that those of retirement age would leave the workforce, thereby reducing the available workforce. The counterargument was presented that young men (and now women) would be able to enter the workforce to fill the newly created vacuum. Cries of socialism also stood in the way, a familiar theme during an age where communism and socialism were blatantly considered un-American. These controversies were covered, and now social security exists as a safety net for Americans who have progressed to retirement age and an enticement to finish their careers.
