With thousands of civilians being members of military families, it was necessary to establish a program that would be able to manage their care and bridge the gap between military insurance and civilian providers. Military families tend to grow, and the old policy of having military doctors treat civilian patients has simply become unwieldy and impossible to maintain. Out of this conundrum came CHAMPUS, the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services. Decades later, it is now known as TRICARE and provides extensive medical options for the thousands of civilian members of military families in America today.
