About Tricare West

The complexity of caring for military families and their civilian members has always been a challenge for the government and armed forces.  Initially, it seemed sensical that the same medical staff who cared for the soldiers would care for their families, at least while they were on base.  As the needs of military staff members and their families grew, it became apparent this situation was going to become untenable, and a solution would have to be found.  It was this pressure that led to the development of the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Uniformed Services, or CHAMPUS.

Aside from being a bit of a mouthful, CHAMPUS wasn’t quite up to the task in its initial incarnation.  This led to multiple renovations and overhauls to make it fit the needs of the people it was designed to serve. Numerous contracts were addressed and modified until the current models for TRICARE West came into existence.
