About VSP

The Joint Council on Vision Care and the Alameda Contra Costa Optometric Society both came into existence in 1954 and came together to form CVS, or California Vision Services just a year later.  Frustrated with the lack of options available in the vision insurance industry at the time a team of optometrists came together to sell prepaid vision benefits.  Initially intended to serve as an employee benefit program to schools, governments, and local businesses it eventually became a champion for vision care benefits in all plans throughout the region.

The organization started to expand through multi-state contracts, building a base of small contracts to lend itself the authority necessary to begin tackling larger organizations contracts.  In 1965 they finally were able to sign a contract with the Western Conference of Teamsters.  From that point forward the business started to expand rapidly, eventually becoming VSP in 1976.  In 2000 the company began aggressively expanding again, and crossed international boundaries in 2007 when it entered Canada, and again in 2013 when it reached out across international waters.
